CONFIRMED: Utah Jazz, Salt Lake City to host NBA All Star Game in 2023

August 22, 2019 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Organization sources recently disclosed that the Utah Jazz will host the NBA All Star Game in 2023 or 2024. This will be the second time Salt Lake City will host the event. The previous occurrence happened in 1993.

Utah Jazz to host event in Salt Lake City, Utah again after 30 years

The organization placed its bid to host a future NBA All Star Game back in February 2018. At the time, local political leaders seemed very hopeful the bid would be won by Utah.

“On behalf of the State of Utah, we are committed to the hard work of bringing the NBA All-Star Game to Salt Lake City.
We know this about the Miller family, Utah Jazz organization, and our state — the NBA All-Star Game will be above the rim and the NBA family will fall in love again with the great people of our state.”

Utah Governor Gary Herbert in 2018.

“We are very excited and well prepared to bring back the NBA All-Star Game to Vivint Smart Home Arena. We are a vibrant, diverse and culturally rich community that knows how to celebrate the experience of sport. Our 2002 Olympic Winter Games remain the standard against which all other Olympic Winter Games are measured.”

Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski in 2018.

Utah’s political leaders weren’t the only big names backing the Utah Jazz organization and the city in which it resides. In addition, Greg Miller, son of Gail Miller made sure to sound in on the potential of the game making a return.

Utah Jazz teammates Karl Malone and John Stockton received co-MVP honors in the 1993 NBA All Star Game held in Salt Lake City.

“The 1993 NBA All-Star Game was memorable for many reasons. Our new arena was just two years old, and we were so proud to welcome the NBA family into our new home. It is with great excitement and anticipation that we now invite the NBA to return this celebration of our sport back to Salt Lake City for a game elevated.”

CONFIRMED: Utah Jazz to debut “mountain” jerseys next season

August 9, 2019 by Kelby Jones 1 Comment

Sources say local retailers are stocking up on a Utah Jazz “mountain” jersey in anticipation of next season’s debut.

The Utah Jazz organization is planning on incorporating mountains into the design of the team’s jerseys next season. This, according to one local employee at a sporting goods retail store in the greater Salt Lake City area.

The employee claims the store’s manager had planned and ordered large amounts of the jersey after receiving communications from the decision-makers, presumably with Nike.

The previous “mountain” jerseys were made famous in the late 1990’s during the teams two runs to the NBA Finals. Both runs ending in losses to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in both matchups.

Goodbye to the Utah Jazz City Edition Jersey?

The Utah Jazz made noise during the 2017-2018 season by debuting their newly-designed “City Edition” jerseys. The jerseys revolved around an entirely new design-scheme, including a red, orange and yellow color pallet.

According to the local employee, the new Utah Jazz “mountain” jerseys will be replacing these jerseys all together. This may come as a surprise to those who thought this design may have been foreshadowing something bigger to come.

Other Utah Jazz Jersey Concepts to Consider

Some, including John Stockton, weren’t big fans of the Utah Jazz throwback purple mountain jerseys originally. Furthermore, some STILL aren’t big fans of it, even today.

For those of you who aren’t happy to bring back the team’s heritage, enjoy a few Utah Jazz jersey concept designs, courtesy of a Google search.

Donovan Mitchell Discusses Sophomore Campaign w/ The Crossover

April 20, 2019 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Donovan Mitchell Utah Jazz

The rising Utah Jazz guard experienced quite the learning curve while transitioning into his second full NBA season.

Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell recently visited The Crossover while in the midst of the late-season road trip on the east coast.

The Crossover crew brought the up-and-comer in to discuss what it’s like to be a second-season player in the NBA.

Watch the video from The Crossover’s post below:

What’s Different for Donovan Mitchell?

After a stellar rookie season which included a first-round playoff victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder and former MVP Russell Westbrook, Donovan knew things would be far more difficult in the years to come. In contrast, year two has been a new experience for the Sophomore.

“This year, it’s different. I have to be locked in for every moment, they make it so tough on every possession,” Mitchell told The Crossover. “But the words I’ve received from James [Harden], from Kobe [Bryant], Chris Paul, it’s helped me understand that. I think in my rookie year, I was really taken aback. This year I came seeking advice.”

That teachability is just the beginning of a long process aimed at avoiding any “sophomore slumps” that might have been heading Donovan’s way. He also had to learn, very quickly, what it means to hold and be held accountable by teammates.

Donovan Mitchell on Overcoming This Season’s Slow Start

Donovan Mitchell Utah Jazz

After a slow start to the season, the team needed Donovan to step up. Furthermore, to retain the leadership role he had earned the year before.

“Coach Snyder stressed to me that this year was going to be a lot different, and it was one thing for me to hear, and another thing for me to go through it,” Mitchell said regarding Utah’s poor start. “It’s one of those things you really have to go through, to experience. They kind of anticipated this happening, I didn’t. But to have the support of my teammates through the early part of the season was really special, and really helped get us back to where we need to be.”

So… what exactly did Donovan change about how he was playing this season? And how did it help the team get back on the winning path?

“Changing my pace and making an effort to get to the free-throw line, that’s something James [Harden] is great at and Dwyane Wade talked to me about as well,” Mitchell said. “To hear that from them and then trying to follow their advice really helped me get back on track.”

What’s To Come for Donovan Mitchell?

In conclusion, Donovan Mitchell may have learned some big lessons and have even bigger plans in his future. However, right now his only focus is on this season’s playoff push.

“It’s been a crazy past two years, trying to absorb everything I’ve learned,” Mitchell said. “We’ve got a healthy lineup, and one that can be pretty special. Now we’ve got to prove it each and every night.”

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Calls Jazz Fans NBA’s Best

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Calls Utah Jazz Fans Best in NBA

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern Calls Jazz Fans NBA’s Best

The Jazz Fan Show already knew (obviously), but it’s nice to have it officially on record.

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern (predecessor to current NBA Commissioner Adam Silver) led the league owners from Feb. 1, 1984 to Jan. 31, 2014.

The NBA saw its most significant growth during Stern’s tenure. His time included some of the most legendary NBA players of all time, including Jazz greats John Stockton and Karl Malone. Michael Jordan, most commonly believed to be the best player in NBA history, also played the majority of his career during Stern’s time leading the league.

Watch Live: David Stern Calls Jazz Fans NBA’s Best

The Big East Conference recently interviewed Stern. During the interview, questions about Stern’s time in the NBA became the focus. The interviewer at one point asked Stern who the best fan base in the NBA is.

His response?

“We’ve got some crazy fanbases all over but they’re about as intense as it comes in Utah.”

The video was then posted on The Big East’s Twitter page. Watch it below:

Rudy Gobert Ranked #14 on SI NBA Top 100

September 10, 2018 by Jazz Fan Show Leave a Comment

Rudy Gobert No. 14 Sports Illustrated NBA Top 100

Ranked No. 14 – Utah Jazz Center Rudy Gobert

Sports Illustrated Ranks reigning DPOY No. 14 in NBA’s Top 100.

The incomplete list is released chunk-by-chunk, with Donovan Mitchell, Derrick Favors, Joe Ingles and Ricky Rubio previously coming in between 34-60.

Sports Illustrated’s The Crossover, written by Ben Golliver and Rob Mahoney, recently released its Top NBA 100 list for the upcoming 2019 NBA season. Coming in between spots #34 and #60 were four players for the Utah Jazz: Donovan Mitchell, Derrick Favors, Joe Ingles and Ricky Rubio.

Not gonna lie, this was kind of a surprise for me. I mean, obviously I know he’s this good. I just always assumed that was because I’m a die hard fan.

Nonetheless, it is really really nice to see some national love for the big guy. Prayers up that he stays healthy all year and is able to show us what an entire season of pure and utter dominance in the art of rim defense looks like.

Here’s what Sports Illustrated had to say about our beloved Frenchman:

“Gobert (13.5 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 2.3 BPG) is so imposing that he actually changes the psychology of a game. Opponents with the ball in hand turn their focus inward; you can see confident players talk themselves out of shots they would ordinarily love to take, all for fear of Gobert swatting them away. Many teams will go to amazing lengths to pull Gobert away from the basket—challenging him laterally rather than vertically—but there’s only so much you can do to separate from a 7’1” shot-blocker with Gobert’s instincts. An incredible number of plays will always be in his reach.
His presence provides a sense of order, a way of life. Utah orients its entire defense around Gobert, knowing that he’ll not only influence a ton of shots himself, but give teammates license to apply their own pressure. This has a constricting effect. Passing lanes are tighter. Driving lanes are contested. It’s difficult to even work through your offense against Gobert and the Jazz, much less score. Defenders are emboldened at every turn, channeling Gobert’s confidence. Gobert plays with the sureness of a player who knows exactly what he is. There are no misconceptions to his game—no indulgent post-ups or rash dribble moves. Just no-frills, highly efficient offense predicated on putting as little space between him and the rim as possible. Cutting off his access to the basket is easier said than done; even last season’s Rockets, who switched as capably as any team in the league, couldn’t entirely deny Gobert’s rolls, cuts, and put-backs. There are some things you can never take away from a seven-footer when he’s wholly committed to playing his game.”

Donovan Mitchell Ranked #34 on SI’s NBA Top 100

September 10, 2018 by Jazz Fan Show Leave a Comment

Donovan Mitchell Ranked No. 34 on Sports Illustrated NBA Top 100

Ranked No. 34 – Utah Jazz Guard Donovan Mitchell

Sports Illustrated Ranks Utah Jazz rising star No. 34 in NBA’s Top 100.

The incomplete list is being revealed chunk-by-chunk, with Derrick Favors, Joe Ingles and Ricky Rubio previously coming in between 51-60.

Sports Illustrated’s The Crossover, written by Ben Golliver and Rob Mahoney, recently released its Top NBA 100 list for the upcoming 2019 NBA season. Coming in between spots #51 and #60 were three players for the Utah Jazz: Derrick Favors, Joe Ingles and Ricky Rubio.

To begin, let me just say that I think this ranking is low for Donovan. I would have expected to see him more in the 20-30 range.

That being said, I love it when people underestimate Donovan Mitchell. The guy doesn’t let it go! Just like we’ve seen over and over in the past (ROY cough cough) Donovan has been underrated. Expect Donovan to make a big jump on this list in the 2019-2020 season because of that big old chip on his shoulder.

Sports Illustrated had the following to say about the true Rookie of the Year.

“His game has drawn endless comparisons to Dwyane Wade and his marketability is straight from the Damian Lillard playbook, but the recent star that Mitchell (20.5 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 3.7 APG) most embodied down the stretch was a young Derrick Rose. The unadulterated calm and confidence. The willingness to sacrifice life and limb to get to the rim. The savior scoring role on a roster built for defense. The ability to get veteran teammates to buy in—fully and eagerly—to everything he was selling. The measured responses to stunning triumphs. The euphoric embrace from his home crowd.
Such lofty comparisons are appropriate for Mitchell, who became just the third rookie guard to average 20+ PPG since 1990. The 22-year-old guard kept raising the bar as he led Utah past Oklahoma City in the first round: 28 points in Game 2 to steal homecourt advantage, 33 points in Game 4 to take a 3-1 lead, and then 38 points in Game 6 to send Russell Westbrook packing. While the Rockets were able to dissect the Jazz in round two, Mitchell’s postseason debut made it clear that he’s set up for major success. His next steps—improving as a three-point shooter, getting to the line more frequently, and growing as a facilitator—are refinements rather than quantum leaps. If Rose was Chicago’s first superstar of the post-Jordan era, Mitchell might very well become Utah’s most beloved and decorated player since Stockton and Malone.”

Sports Illustrated Ranks Three Jazz Players #51, #56 & #57 in NBA’s Top 100

September 9, 2018 by Jazz Fan Show Leave a Comment

Sports Illustrated Ranks Three Utah Jazz Players 51, 56 & 57 in NBA’s Top 100

The incomplete list is being revealed chunk-by-chunk, with Derrick Favors, Joe Ingles and Ricky Rubio coming in between 51-60.

Jazz Fan Show - Derrick Favors

Ranked No. 51 – Utah Jazz Forward Derrick Favors

To start, the highest ranked Jazz player outside of the NBA’s top 50 is Derrick Favors. Derrick comes in ranked number 51 on the list. Many fans thought Favors would sign a deal elsewhere last offseason. However, no complaints were heard when he resigned with Utah.

Here’s what Sports Illustrated has to say about Derrick:

“Rudy Gobert casts a long shadow, the kind that obscures just how good his frontcourt partner can be. If transported to another team, Favors (12.3 PPG, 7.3 RPG) could anchor a defense all his own with even greater optionality. Gobert is the sort of defender whose strengths are so specific and so pronounced that they all but commit a team to defending a particular way. Any schematic discussion regarding Favors is more open-ended; his team could drop against the pick-and-roll, pressure the ball, switch outright, or even rotate between those options as some highly effective defenses do. No matter the approach, Favors is the kind of big you can trust to execute it.
Or, if you’re the Jazz, you can roll out Favors and Gobert in tandem to stomp opponents down by 7.3 points per 100 possessions in the regular season and 10.9 points in the playoffs. Consider those data points with the necessary disclaimers (namely, that the Jazz limit the exposure of those big lineups in matchups they’re poorly suited for), but the reality of playing Favors at the four is less dated than one might think. For opponents other than the Rockets or Warriors, Favors can be punishing. Smaller forwards just don’t have much recourse when Favors rolls to the rim, but playing a more traditional big to counter Favors then plays right into the hands of the Jazz defense. Players don’t need to be dominant to help turn a specific matchup. They need only to have the right combination of skills at the right time, as Favors often does.”

Jazz Fan Show - Joe Ingles Sports Illustrated

Ranked No. 56 – Utah Jazz Guard Joe Ingles

Two years ago, this ranking may have warranted a spit take from most fans. If you would have told me Joe Ingles (signed off waivers, looks like an agin math teacher) would even be considered for this list, I’d have called you insane to your face.

But here we are. Joe Ingles, one of the most talked about Jazz men nationally (and internationally) is a legitimate NBA star. The lovable, foul-mouthed father of two-year-old twins comes in at number 56. Here’s what Sports Illustrated had to say about the Aussie:

“If you were to ask a basketball coach to describe their ideal role player, they might unknowingly profile Ingles (11.5 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 4.8 APG). Think about it. They’d want someone who’s easy to play with, like a pass-first wing player who also happens to be one of the best three-point shooters in the league. Beyond that, they’d want someone with enough of a handle to initiate some offense and enough vision to make smart plays. Defensive commitment is a given, and the ability to guard multiple positions is a perk. The player would need to be intensely competitive, but it’s best if they’re also unassuming. Coaches would want the kind of player who understands his team’s principles enough to know when to break them—a delicate blend of reliability and creativity.
It’s not hard to find more athletic or higher-scoring players. The trick is finding many who are as good as Ingles when it comes to supplying the things that teams actually need.”

Jazz Fan Show - Ricky Rubio

Ranked No. 57 – Utah Jazz Guard Ricky Rubio

Towards the beginning of the 2017-2018 season, it’s been well documented that the Jazz were in a bad place. A bad record, injuries and inconsistent play was seriously hampering the team, which still seemed to be reeling from Voldemort(GH)’s departure.

It was at this time that Jazz fans, myself included, began to call for a change. At the top of our list for potential players to trade was Ricky Rubio.

Let me just take a moment to publicly announce how wrong I, and all of Jazz Nation, truly was.

Ricky went on to be one of the most effective point guards in the league. He even outplayed last season’s MVP Russell Westbrook in the first round of the playoffs.

Look for Ricky to start the season better this year. The learning curve and adjustment periods should be well behind him. Here’s what Sports Illustrated had to say about the Spaniard:

“Rubio (13.1 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 5.3 APG) is prone to weeks-long mirages of effective shooting, in which it appears—for some fleeting moment—that his long-range accuracy has turned a corner. The back half of last season was the most prolonged and compelling fantasy yet: 41 games in which Rubio made 41% of his threes, coinciding with Utah playing genuinely dominant basketball. That figure will not hold. But to be fair, it doesn’t have to. Given where Rubio is coming from (31.5% shooting on three-pointers over his first six years in the league), even modest, reliable improvement could be transformative.
When you’re already one of the best defenders, passers, and rebounders at your position, a smaller step forward can feel like a stride. There are two factors at work (and thus two parallel reasons to believe in his progress last season): Rubio has now posted a career-high effective field goal percentage in three straight seasons, showing a clear developmental arc; and separately, only now is Rubio playing for a coaching staff that seems to really understand him. You can’t just plug Rubio into any system and hope for the best. Utah gets that, and has found ways to push their point guard without missing the boat on what makes him so valuable in the first place.”
