Utah Jazz Trade Alec Burks to Cavs, Kyle Korver Returning to Utah

November 28, 2018 by Jazz Fan Show Leave a Comment

Jazz Trade Alec Burks (and Picks) to Cavs, Kyle Korver Returning to Utah

Jazz Trade Alec Burks (and Picks) to Cavs, Kyle Korver Returning to Utah

Just before 6:30 PM EST, Adrian Wojnarowski (who else would it be?) broke news on Twitter that the Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers had agreed on deal sending two second round picks to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Kyle Korver, who played for Utah from 2007 – 2010.

Utah will send two future second-round picks to the Cavs for Korver, league sources tell ESPN. https://t.co/lismhVt0JH

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) November 28, 2018

Soon after, Woj informed his followers that Utah would also be sending Alec Burks to Cleveland in that trade.

Utah is also sending Alec Burks to Cavaliers in the deal, league source tells ESPN.

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) November 28, 2018

Eventually, after all was clarified, Utah is sending Alec Burks and 2020/2021 second round picks to Cleveland in exchange for Kyle Korver.

CLICK HERE to read Adrian Wojnarowski’s post on ESPN.com.

How Will Kyle Korver Fit Into the Utah Jazz System?

Utah has a few obvious shortcomings that need to be addressed if the team plans to make a similar run to last season. Perhaps the most glaring of those weaknesses is 3-point percentage.

As a team, the Jazz shoot just 45% from the field and 32% from beyond the arc. Alec Burks was actually one of Utah’s leaders in 3-point percentage this season, but still only came in at around 37%.

Kyle Korver on the other hand…

Utah Jazz Kyle Korver Alec Burks

Kyle Korver’s shooting percentage is just one aspect of what he can bring to a team.

Being a pure shooter, and honestly one of the greatest shooters of all time, his mere presence around the outside is enough to help space out an opponents defense, opening up a clogged-up lane, where Donovan and Rudy thrive.

Korver has two years remaining on his contract after this season, and will make a little over $7 million per season.

Personally, I’m excited to see how this helps the Jazz offense get the kick start is so desperately needs.

What Utah Jazz Are Giving Up in Alec Burks

Alec Burks has been with the Utah Jazz organization for what seems like forever.

Battling different injuries and other struggles throughout his career, Burks has been able to average 9.6 points per game, including just over 8 points per game in 17 contests this season.

Burks was in the final year of his contract, and it seemed unlikely Utah would even offer a contract to bring the now NBA vet back next season.

While it’s sad to see AB go, it’s apparent the Jazz needed to make a change.

Now, the question remains:

How will this affect the Utah Jazz moving forward?

Only time will tell.

Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Sacramento Kings Preseason

October 11, 2018 by Jazz Fan Show Leave a Comment

Takeaways - Utah Jazz vs Sacramento Kings Preseason

Utah Jazz vs Sacramento Kings Preseason

Jazz Stay Perfect

The Utah Jazz vs Sacramento Kings preseason game seemed to be over almost before it even started. The Jazz ended the first quarter up 39-10 and scored 71 points by halftime.

The game featured two organizations which have been on opposite sides of the spectrum as of late. The Jazz being picked to remain near the top of the western conference for the foreseeable future. The Kings, perennial cellar-dwellers without much hope staring them in the face.

This gap was extremely apparent as the Utah Jazz absolutely crushed the Sacramento Kings, in Sacramento, 132-93.

For a review of this game, CLICK HERE!

Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Sacramento Kings Preseason

#1 | Who Will Be The Jazz’s Sixth Man?

This is a question I’ve found myself asking over and over throughout the preseason.

It’s no secret that the Jazz have quite the depth on their bench. The problem is that the Jazz seem to be so deep  that I’m not sure who will lead that group.

I’ve narrowed my choices down to Jae Crowder and Alec Burks. Continue reading to find out why.

#2 | Jae Crowder on Movement

At Utah Jazz media day, Jae Crowder was able to speak about getting into better shape over the off season. He even mentioned losing around 14 pounds since last year. When asked why, Crowder responded because he wasn’t moving like he should’ve been.

Personally, I think Jae is going to have one helluva year. I’ve been saying from the very beginning of his Utah Jazz career that if he could just get an offseason with the organization, we’d be seeing a much-improved player in the year(s) to come.

This already seems to be the case, as Jae has already noticeably improved his game on both sides of the floor.

#3 | The Revival of Alec Burks

Another thing I’ve noticed is the amount of playing time Alec Burks has been getting.

Look, if there’s one thing we’ve noticed over the past few years, it’s that Alec Burks can score the basketball. The issue has been his consistency and health over long durations of time.

I could see this being the year the bad luck finally flips for Alec. He seems to be understanding Quin Snyder’s offense, moving well and even succeeding in it. We see less hard falls at the rim and a lot more long range shots hit nothing but net.

Look for Alec Burks to surprise us all a little by contributing in a much larger way this year.

#4 | Change to the Rules

As I was watching the game, I noticed Craig Bolerjack mention a change to the rules in the NBA this year.

The change comes to the shot clock, which will not reset to 14 seconds after hitting the rim instead of back to 24 seconds.

How will this affect the game? I’m excited and terrified to find out!

#5 | The First Thing I Notice About Thabo

Thabo Sefolosha has been a Jazz Man now for a little over a year. Each time he steps onto the court, I notice one thing: The Nike Air Max.

Thabo Sefolosha Nike Air Max

Thabo is the only player in the NBA who wears this shoe to play.

Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Portland Trailblazers Preseason Matchup

October 7, 2018 by Jazz Fan Show Leave a Comment

utah jazz vs portland trailblazers preseason

Utah Jazz vs Portland Trailblazers Preseason Matchup

Jazz use late rally to stay perfect on the preseason.

The Utah Jazz vs Portland Trailblazers preseason matchup took place Saturday night in Portland, Oregon. The Jazz struggled early, but used a late fourth quarter rally to get the win and move to 3-0 against NBA teams this preseason.

CLICK HERE to see a summary of the Utah Jazz vs Portland Trailblazers preseason matchup.

Takeaways from the Utah Jazz vs Portland Trailblazers Preseason Matchup

Listed in no particular order…

#1 | Jazz Team Depth (or lack of Blazers Team Depth)

It’s no secret that Portland has one of the best, high-scoring backcourt duo’s in the NBA. This was an issue for the Jazz last year, and seemed to be continuing theme through the first 2.5 quarters of Sunday’s game.

However, it was apparent that whenever bench players found themselves in the game, the tide would quickly swing well in Utah’s favor. In fact, Utah used a HUGE 4th quarter to ultimately win the game. The quarter saw the Jazz mostly playing their third team against Portland’s, and the competition wasn’t even close.

The real question remains: are the Jazz incredibly deep, or are the Blazers incredibly weak on the bench?

My vote is both.

#2 | Donovan’s Ankle

In the third quarter, Donovan Mitchell was switching to defend Damian Lillard when he slipped and went down noticeably in pain. He eventually walked off the floor and returned, looking basically unharmed.

Prior to the game, social media lit up with the newly-designed shoes the young star would be wearing (BE HUMBLE). So my first thought when I saw him going down was something along the lines of “IT’S THE SHOES!”

Should Donovan continue trying out new pairs of sneakers, or should he stick with what he knows (that he won’t get hurt in)?

#3 | Blazers Always Looking Up

Every single call. Every single possession.

No matter what the outcome of the possession was (it literally happened once after a wide open 3-point make), it seemed like every Portland player would roll their eyes and complain to the official.

Obviously I don’t know exactly what’s going on out there on the court, but EVERY SINGLE POSSESSION?!

I’m mostly concerned for the players because everyone knows if you roll your eyes too much, they can get stuck upside down or completely eject from your skull (anyone else a 30 Rock fan?).

#4 | The Junior Jazz circuit was good to Niang

Georges Niang spent all summer on a massive road trip visiting young Junior Jazz players across the state of Utah. Something must’ve clicked for Niang during that trip because he was light’s out in Portland.

Niang’s 3-point shooting was critical to the Jazz winning that game in the 4th quarter. And after seeing his performance, it made me wonder if we’ll see Niang as much as we saw Jerebko last year?

A lot of Jonas’ minutes were due to injury, so logically, I hope we don’t.

However, if we find ourselves in a similar situation injury-wise this year, I’m not as concerned.
