Game 13 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies

Game 13 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies

Game 13 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies

‘Headband Joe’ and the Gang finally beat those pesky bears.

The Utah Jazz began another week-long road trip by playing a familiar foe Monday night in Memphis. This was the third matchup this season between the two organization, with the Grizzlies already owning a 2-0 record over the Jazz, stealing two in Salt Lake City.

This game seemed to be going down the same path as the first two of the season. The Jazz opened up a small lead, which disappeared in almost an instance in the second half.

However, after all was said and done, it looked like the Jazz finally learned from their mistakes. Road teams remain undefeated in this season series, as the Jazz start the road trip off the right way getting a W in Memphis 96 – 88.

Quick Notes

#1 | #HeadbandJoe, Obviously

Game 13 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies

All hail #Headband Joe.

Look at the dude. He’s got blood running down his neck and chest, just absolutely destroying any chances of that jersey being re-wearable.

But really, the guy played great and really set the tone for the Jazz. His play really could be the reason we were able to get that victory at all.

Let me explain…

#2 | I Finally Figured It Out…

So I know everyone’s always saying the strength of the team is the team and all that, but the reality is that Utah matches up against some teams better than it does others.

I know. This is some seriously innovative analysis, right?

But I think the reason we have so much trouble with Memphis is the fact that Gasol plays Rudy so well, and Conley completely shuts Ricky Rubio down.

Those two positions are Memphis’ strong points. Unfortunately, they are also the Jazz.

Add that to the fact Memphis plays less like bears and more like snails, and you’ve got yourself a perfect recipe for a Jazz loss.

The way to combat this is to get increased production from your other positions. Players like Derrick Favors and the before-mentioned Joe Ingles have to have big games in these scenarios if the Jazz stand a chance.

Case and point: Monday night.

#3 | GTYH: Who’s taking a free throw to save your life?

The Jazz actually shot north of 75% from the free throw line against Memphis, which unfortunately, is higher than they’re probably used to.

Right now, the Jazz free throw shooting, or lack thereof, is one of my biggest surprises from this season. And it’s not like the Jazz aren’t getting the attempts…

They’re leading the league in FTA!

Look for our FT% to go up as we begin get even more into the flow of things… and with it, hopefully our win total.

#4 | Vivint’s “Home” Commercials and Why I’m Uncomfortable

We’ve all seen the commercials. And sure, they make us feel all warm inside, but should they?

Why am I asking this, you ask?

Donovan’s driving a sports car.

SOMEBODY GET THIS GUY A TRUCK, ASAP!

#5 | The Dante Exum Conundrum

Do you love Dante Exum, hate him, or just feel medium about him?

Look for a twitter poll this week…

Game 09 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets

Game 09 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets

Game 09 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets

Jazz Fall Apart in 4th Quarter, Move to 4-5 on Season.

The Jazz played the second game of a (second) back-to-back Saturday night in Denver. Utah’s second game in as many nights came against a red-hot Denver Nuggets teams currently 8-1 on the year.

Donovan Mitchell returned for the Utah Jazz after missing the previous game against Memphis with a tight hamstring. Donovan, along with three other Jazz players (mentioned below) all experienced injuries at one time or another that looked serious.

Luckily for the Jazz, none of these injuries ended up as bad as they looked. The game, on the other hand, was another story.

Utah Jazz lose their third straight game in Denver 102-88.

Watch the full game highlights below:

Quick Notes

#1 | Win the Games You SHOULD Win

…and when you lose the games you should lose, nobody will care as much…

I don’t think it’s Threat Level Midnight yet, but there are definitely some Jazz fans panicking.

Should we be panicking? If not, at what point should we?

#2 | A Silver Lining… Of Sorts…

At different points during this game, Rudy Gobert, Joe Ingles, Donovan Mitchell and Dante Exum all looked like they could have sustained serious (potentially season-ending) injuries.

Luckily for the Jazz, each of these players were able to return to the game at some point or another.

My question is how long can these Jazz players take this kind of abuse night in and night out? Was Denver just a fluke game, or is this how teams play the Jazz moving forward?

#3 | A Tale of Four Quarters

Game 09 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets

In case you were wondering at what EXACT moment things went back for the Jazz…

#4 | #RememberLastYear

Remember how last year Utah started off really slow, and at one point was in the cellar of the Western Conference?

What happened immediately following that?

Oh that’s right…

Is that what is happening this year also? Is there something to say about players just taking awhile to get back into NBA basketball shape, regardless of what team or teammates they played with the year prior?

When you think about it, all these players went away for the summer, came back, adjusted to the elevation, then went on a huge road trip to cities at or below seal level, then came back to the elevation…

That’s an excuse, but still.

#5 | Looking Ahead

The Jazz have three games this week, two of which they should (probably) lose.

Is Dallas a MUST-WIN game? Are we already seeing a MUST-WIN game this early in the season?

Ugh.

Prop Results

Probably should mention that none of made any prop picks this game. Trust us, we have a good reason why (we forgot).

Thus, we all have been forced to use the prior game’s picks for this game.

May God help us all.

Game 02 Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors

October 20, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Utah Jazz vs GSW

Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors Part of Entertaining NBA Week 01

The Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors game opened up the home schedule for Jazz fans this week. The game was featured on ESPN, marketed as matchup with playoff implications.

The game saw the Jazz jump to a big early lead behind the sharp shooting of Joe Ingles. Ingles finished the game with a career high 27 points in the matchup.

Unfortunately for the home crowd, GSW made the huge comeback. All, of course, capped off by former Jazz man Jonas Jerebko’s last second tip-in off a Kevin Durant miss to seal the game.

The Warriors leave Salt Lake City with the single-point victory, 124-123.

Watch the video below for full game highlights:

Podcast – Jazz Fan Show’s Takeaways from Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors

This topic has been discussed on Episode 03 of The Jazz Fan Show, which you can listen to below:

#1 | Joe Ingles AKA “Old Reliable”

After my nerves were finally calm following the Utah Jazz vsGolden State Warriors game, I came out of my rage blackout to realize Joe Ingles led the team in scoring with a career-high 27 points.

Keeping in mind it was somewhere around 1:00 AM at this point, my mind began to settle upon the realization of the possibility of Joe Ingles leading the team in scoring for the year.

Luckily, I was able to fall asleep soon thereafter. BUT, the guy has been the undeniable leader for the team this season.

When the ball is in his hands, my doubts seem to vanish.

I see the pick-and-roll begin to form and I know my man Joe will make sure either he or Rudy get those buckets.

Even when he’s guarding- WAIT.

…I need to stop or this may spiral right into a love poem.

#2 | Refereeing Inconsistencies

One of the main offseason focus points for NBA referees this year was the hold that takes place after a screen.

This was obvious during the first half when The Jazz made it to the free throw line more than 20 times.

However, something at halftime changed the refs minds about the idea. The Jazz found themselves shooting less than 20 free throws in the second half.

I get that emotion and human-error has its place within refereeing. I’m just sick of everybody, including the freaking REFEREES, worshipping this incredibly top-heavy “super team” called the Warriors.

#3 | Expectations for Exum #Alliteration

Dante showed up to play again tonight, which of course, I personally loved to see.

The guy is playing great, and there are even times when I trust him more than Rubio in the PG role.

I’m not saying he should take that starting role from Ricky by any means. I actually prefer him coming off the bench and facing other bench players most of the time.

However, I’ve already become more comfortable with Dante coming in and running the offense. I trust that he can do so.

That being said, please Dante… PLEASE DANTE! You gotta work on not landing so hard, man. I get that it’s the NBA and that happens, but every single time you go to the hole? Maybe take a skydiving class that teaches landing techniques or something?

#4 | Draymond, Draymond, Draymond

I don’t want to waste much energy typing about this clown. Refs have been told to enforce respect for the game, but nothing’s changed for Bozo the clown.

Should’ve been tossed or at least given technical fouls multiple times.

#5 | Jerebko’s Tip = Curse of The Bear?

The man who played the Jazz Bear was let go just prior to the Utah Jazz vs GSW game. The man had played the character for 24 years, receiving the “mascot of the year” award five times in that span, including last season.

When Kevin Durant missed his game-winning shot attempt and Jerebko was standing under the hoop, unchallenged by a single Jazz player, it was almost as if I could see the ghost of the former Jazz Bear sitting on the rim to make sure the shot dropped.

Good one, ghost. Glad we got revenge out of the way early.

Game 01 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings

Game 01 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings

Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings Goes Differently in Rd. 2

As the first regular season game of the season for both clubs, the Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings game was surprisingly close.

Only days after absolutely massacring the Kings in preseason action, the Utah Jazz struggled to get things going throughout the game. Luckily, the Jazz bench came through to help the team eek out a six-point victory 123-117.

Game 01 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings

Game 01 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Sacramento Kings

#1 | Starting Things Off the Right Way

If I were a betting man, my money would have been on a Derrick Favors dunk to open up this season’s scoring.

However, for one reason or another, the Utah Jazz had a hard time getting things started last night. Fortunately, Joe Ingles (AKA Old Reliable) finally broke the seal with a hammer dunk in the first quarter.

Can you think of a better way for the Jazz to open up the season?

I can not.

#2 | The “Ex” Factor (Sorry for Being So Cliche)

Who will Dante become this season? If it’s anything close to his role in last night’s victory, he’s worth every penny of that recent extension.

If you’ve listened to the show lately, you’ll know that I chose Dante to be my most improved player on the team as well as the most pleasant surprise.

After seeing him go from 2-feet behind the 3-point line to a ringer roll at the rim in TWO steps (see below), it’s looking like I made the right choice…

#3 | Alec Burks = Spark Plug

We’ve heard over and over about how Alec Burks is looking like he did before the string of injuries. What did last night tell us?

When the Jazz got off to the terrible start, Quin Snyder brought Alec off the bench sooner than most expected. Why?

Because Alec is a spark plug.

The team couldn’t hit a shot. It was looking like the first game nerves were playing a big factor…

Alec Burks comes in, immediately gets the ball on the right wing and doesn’t hesitate to shoot.

WATER.

Can’t wait to see how he contributes this year. Could he be our official 6th Man???

Also, the bench in general was stellar:

#4 | The DNP

Grayson Allen didn’t get any time. Seemed kind of weird.

Is he really struggling as much as this makes it seem? I doubt it.

Also, I trust our coach. Hopefully Grayson figures it out soon and is able to contribute in a real way.

#5 | “When was the last time you were scared of the Sacramento Kings?”

In Episode 02 of The Jazz Fan Show, I asked Ryan this question. My answer was when Peja was on the team.

Guess who was in attendance at last night’s game?

Peja and Chris Webber.

Guess what? Still not scared.
