Game 06 Takeaways – Utah Jazz @ Dallas Mavericks

Game 06 Takeaways - UTAH JAZZ @ DALLAS MAVERICKS

Game 06 Takeaways – Utah Jazz @ Dallas Mavericks

Deep Jazz bench steps up on second night of road trip back-to-back.

The Utah Jazz visited Dallas for their second road game in as many nights Sunday to face off against the Mavericks and rookie Luka Doncic.

This was the first game for the Utah Jazz since beating the New Orleans Pelicans in Louisiana Saturday night.

Utah started the game well, but watched Dallas come back to take and even retain the lead for a time late in the second half.

The Utah Jazz were able to get good contributions from some players sitting pretty far down the bench, including career nights for Georges Niang and Rookie Grayson Allen.

Dallas’ comeback would eventually fall short, however. Utah leaves Dallas with the W, 113-104. Jazz move to 4-2 on the season.

Quick Notes

#1 | How much wood DUNKS would a woodchuck chuck GOBERT DUNK if a woodchuck could chuck wood NO ONE CAN STOP GOBERT FROM DUNKING?

Remember when we used to say things like “YOU GOTTA DUNK THAT ISH, RUDY!!” all the time when we watched Jazz games?

If the past two games are any indication, that may be a thing of the past.

I will say that while Rudy may not have had such an easy time dunking against DeAndre Jordan in Dallas.

BUT… he made up for it with that soft touch (and french yell) rarely in a player Rudy’s size:

“Throw it down, big man.”
Bill Walton

#2 | No Derrick, No Problem (For Now)

Not a lot to say here. Just nice to see the Jazz replace the production of such a key piece of the team, who’s out with injury.

A lot of that production was made up by….

#3 | Georges Making Most of Minutes Left Behind by Jerebko

After Jonas Jerebko and the Utah Jazz parted ways in the offseason, it became clear Georges Niang would be the closest thing to a direct player replacement in that role this season.

Going into the year, I was curious to see if Niang would actually play as much as Jerebko did last year for Utah. He had just signed his contract recently, and was just a small amount of time out of the G(D) League.

I know it’s still early in the year, but it seems like I’m seeing quite a bit of playing time from Niang. Not that I should be surprised, considering his contribution in the time he’s played this year.

Career night for Niang, who finished with 13 points in 13 minutes.

Helping Niang fill the void left by Derrick Favors was…

#4 | Grayson w/ the Gem

Grayson saw some extended time in this one. Based on the results, he may see more in the near future…

Game 06 Takeaways - Utah Jazz @ Dallas Mavericks

It’s like watching a middle-reliever come in to strike out the side w/ 12 pitches.

#5 | DONNY DUNKO RETURNS

Glad to have him back.

Game 03 Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies

Game 03 Takeaways - Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies

Game 03 Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies

Like watching a car wreck in slow motion.

The Memphis Grizzlies came into Salt Lake City to face a Utah Jazz team looking to bounce back after Friday’s last-second loss to GSW.

Many, including us here on The Jazz Fan Show, believed this bounce back to be almost inevitable. One of us even believed a 15+-point victory was in store for the home team.

Unfortunately for Jazz fans (and hosts of the Jazz Fan Show), Memphis ends up leaving Utah with the 92-84 victory over the now 1-2 Jazz.

Watch the highlights below:

#1 | Would You Rather?

*May or May Not Actually Be True

Let me start off by telling you that as co-host of The Jazz Fan Show, I’ve basically become a full-fledged radio star*.

Because of this, people are always contacting me asking to donate incredible tickets to upcoming games*.

To start my Monday evening off right, I took advantage of my new star status* by taking in the following view in the arena:

Game 03 Takeaways - Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies

I left the arena Monday night completely flabbergasted as to what I had just witnessed.

I was awake most of the night thinking the game over. During this time, I had the following question enter my mind:

Would you rather have incredible tickets to a terrible game, or terrible tickets to an incredible game?

Stay tuned for the results from my Twitter poll.

#2 | The Best Way To Start Your Day (Game)

Following the Utah Jazz loss to GSW on Friday, one might expect the team to be a little “hungover.”

Many teams, to combat this, go up-tempo. This gets the blood pumping and allows muscles to loosen up.

In fact, you could say running is the best way to start your day AND your game.

Unfortunately, the Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies game was anything but an up-tempo game. Memphis knew exactly what to do, slowing the game down to a grind from the very beginning.

Perhaps Ricky Rubio described it best when he said Memphis took the Jazz out of what they do. Luckily, it’s still so SO early in the year.

I expect a correction to be made by the mad scientist Quin Snyder sooner than later.

#3 | Dare We Say It? Nay. We Daren’t.

Okay, look. I hate to say this. But I think the best way to handle this subject is to just confront it head-on.

… At what point do we know if we’re witnessing a Jazz Bear Curse?

#4 | Grayson Finally Debuts

I now get to tell my children and my children’s children that I was in attendance at the game Grayson Allen made his NBA debut for the Utah Jazz.

I’ll tell them the glorious tale of how his team couldn’t score to save their lives, so in what seemed to be a desperation attempt, Grayson was subbed in.

They’ll sit, completely silent when I tell them about his clear-path foul merely seconds after checking in. I can’t wait to witness their awe-struck faces as I recall Grayson’s two free throws, and of course, that three-point swish that made the Grizzlies call their final timeout before going on to still beat the Jazz.

I can’t wait. They’re all going to be so confused.

Oh PS, my wife thought it was funny that he wore gray shoes.

#5 | For Some Reason, It Just Hurts More

When Jonas Jerebko tipped in that game-winner, it hurt. Fortunately, that feeling didn’t last long because we had fought hard and were honestly supposed to lose the game.

When the Jazz couldn’t wake up to play Memphis, it hurt so much more. Why? Jazz were “supposed” to win.

Just another prime example of how expectation is the root of all evil.

Takeaways From the Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats Preseason Matchup

September 29, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Takeaways From the Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats Preseason Matchup

Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats goes exactly as you’d think.

Tonight’s Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats game kicked off the 2018-2019 preseason schedule for the Jazz. While the game went exactly as everyone predicted, the game atmosphere surprised me.

As I looked around the arena, I noticed around 75 percent of the seats were filled.

…for a preseason game.

Against a team from Australia who I genuinely thought may not score a point in the first quarter.

Once again, Jazz fans represent better than any in league. It’s beginning to feel like people are noticing…

My Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats

#1 | Grayson Allen (duh)

After doing so well last season, the Utah Jazz were forced to select late in the first round of the NBA Draft.  Looking at the level of talent that is typically still available at that point, drafting Grayson seemed like a no-brainer.

Fast forward to tonight’s preseason opener against Perth.

Allen checks into the game in the first quarter and has a foul within ten seconds.

“Hmm,” I said.

He then goes on to hit his next five 3-point attempts and finishes the game as one of the leading scorers with 19 points in 22 minutes.

It may not be a performance we come to expect from Grayson as his career settles, but for now, it seems he fits in with the team.

At this point, and with this team, I’ll take it.

#2 | Alec Burks and His Passing Game

During last season’s playoff push against OKC, Alec Burks came off the bench as a surprise contributor to the Utah Jazz victory.

Now, AB seems like he’s been around for a long, long time. But for some reason, it feels a little different this year.

I don’t know exactly what it is. He’s always been quick, a slaher and able to score. Obviously, injuries have played a major role, but up to this point I’ve never seen him make the passes he’s making.

Alex looks healthy. He looks like his swagger is slowly but surely making its way back. But this time, it doesn’t seem like it will overtake AB along with the rest of us.

He’s older, more experienced, and seemingly humble.

Is 2018-2019 the year we finally see AB make the improvements we all know he’s capable of making?

#3 | Early Look at Season Rotation

A few notes: Joe Ingles sat out during the Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats game, which left Royce O’Neale as the starting 2.

It looks like Dante Exum is backing up Ricky Rubio entirely and no longer sharing the backup PG role.

Similar to the end of last year, Derrick Favors sits first and is replaced by Jae Crowder. Late in the first quarter, Rudy Gobert sits and Derrick Favors replaces him at center.

Favs anchoring and first AND second teams. I love it.

Another surprise was the fact that Greyson Allen replaced Donovan Mitchell, and it worked extremely well. Will we see Greyson as the primary backup to Spida all season?

#4 | Talent Gap of Basketball World

All props to the Perth Wildcats.

They knew they’d be massacred by the Utah Jazz (the team’s starting center was 6′ 9″)… and they were.

My experience at the Utah Jazz vs. Perth Wildcats game just reaffirmed the level of talent NBA must have to compete in any way at all.

We’re lucky to be able to witness it first-hand.

#5 | Jammin’ While We’re Jammin’

This is random, but it seemed like the facilities played music over the PA system during literally every Utah Jazz possession.

I know it’s becoming more and more common to hear the jams play during live in-game play, but this seemed like a little much.

Was this just because it was a preseason game, or should we expect this to become the norm moving forward?

My suggestion (because you’re all dying to know)?

Pump the jams. Lose the Jazz dancers.
