Game 24 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Miami Heat

December 4, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Game 24 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Miami Heat

Game 24 Takeaways

Utah Jazz at Miami Heat

Utah Jazz give up big lead, lose to Heat on Wade’s late free throws.

The Utah Jazz closed out their most recent road trip Sunday evening in Miami for a matchup with the Heat and Dwyane Wade.

The Jazz jumped out to a big lead, which they held most of the game. Unfortunately for the Jazz, the Heat were able to force their way back into the game.

In the closing seconds, Wade drove to the hoop and was gifted a questionable foul call on Rudy Gobert’s solid defensive play. He’d go on to hit those two free throws, and the Heat would go on the beat the Jazz 102-100.

Watch the full game highlights below:

Utah Jazz at Miami Heat

Quick Takeaways

Those 3-Point Blues

While the Utah Jazz opted to trade Alec Burks for Kyle Korver in an attempt to inject some life into the team’s shooting from deep, we still continue to struggle from beyond the arc.

The Jazz shot 33% from 3-point range Sunday, which isn’t HORRIBLE, but the issues lie with individuals rather than the team. For example, Donovan Mitchell made just one 3PA out of 7 on this game. Jae Crowder made just 3 of 7.

Will the Jazz find their touch before it’s too late?

Gobert Against The World

I hate to say this, but watching this game, I realized that Rudy Gobert was being outplayed on both sides of the floor by Hassan Whiteside.

I don’t think this is anything new, either. Rudy seems to play really well against run-of-the-mill opponents, but the second a physical big man bodies him up, Gobert basically just melts into mediocrity.

Now, the issue with this is that Hassan Whiteside is not really one of these players that Rudy should be struggling with. He has his own issues that he’s dealing with, including just being good at basketball… overall.

While I’m thankful for Rudy and all he does to help this team win games, it would be nice to see a little bit more consistent play regardless of opponent.

Korver Not a Savior

Kyle Korver can hit the three, that much we know.

The issue here is that everyone seems to think that the simple act of bringing Korver in is going to save the season. It’s not.

Will it help? Yes. But not enough to stand pat.

If the Jazz want to save the season, they need to bring in some scoring and solid defense from the wing position.

Any suggestions?

“Classic” Jerseys Hint at a “Classic” Utah Jazz Team

November 16, 2018 by Andy Allred Leave a Comment

"Classic" Jerseys Hint at a "Classic" Jazz Team

Last week’s game against the Mavericks felt good.  The Jazz certainly didn’t have their best game in history. They struggled with certain aspects of the game, especially free-throw shooting, but their victory never really felt in doubt.

This win seemed to instill a confidence back into the players and the fan base that this version of the Jazz can have success and do some pretty special things when they are playing their game.

The “Classic Edition” Jazz Jerseys

The Jazz donned their “Classic” Purple Jerseys for the first time this year and they did not disappoint.

It was obvious that the Jazz organization and fans alike were excited to show off the new threads.

Since I was a kid, purple has been my favorite color. Now I remember why.

The “Classic Edition” jerseys somehow manage to give a nod to the historic past of the Jazz while simultaneously promising a bright (purple) future.

A New Classic Jazz

The jerseys weren’t the only aspect of the game that resembled Jazz past, the play on the floor did the same. However, the past wasn’t so long ago.

The first half of this game gave fans glimpses into the kind of suffocating defense that the Jazz are capable of and were so known for last year. The players fed off of each other’s energy and seemed to really play a Quin Snyder defense.

The Mavericks did make a push in the second half, and to be honest the Jazz didn’t look quite as sharp. The intensity, however, did not decrease.

The game turned chippy, the game turned physical, and while I hated how many foul shots were taken, I did love the intensity of the Jazz.

Win or Lose, You’ll Know You’ve Played the Jazz

At the beginning of the season I remember saying that win or lose, opponents are going to hate playing against the Jazz.  So far this season, I haven’t seen as much of that attitude as I expected.

But that night I saw it.

The game got pretty heated with six technical fouls and one flagrant.  The Mavericks were frustrated that they were losing. They were frustrated at the Jazz defense, and they responded with their own aggression.

In this humble Jazz fan’s opinion, this has been and should be the identity of the Jazz moving forward:

Hard-nosed defense, not backing down and having each other’s backs.

Not only do I believe this will lead to more Jazz wins, but I also think it will make the hopefully few losses that the Jazz suffer more bearable.

Remember: Apathy is the enemy of fandom.

The Jazz released their schedule for each jersey at the beginning of the season.  They may have to modify that schedule to include a few more “Classic” Jazz nights.

I’m sure the fans will appreciate it.

Look Out for Spida via JabberJazz.com’s Adam Bushman

November 6, 2018 by Adam Bushman (JabberJazz.com) Leave a Comment

Spida MitchellSpida Mitchell, That Is…

The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the most beloved superheroes of the last 50 years. With hundreds of comics, scores of cartoons, and several live action films, we’ve all come to appreciate and expect the greatness of Spider-Man.

Donovan Mitchell, Utah’s own “Friendly, Neighborhood” Spida, has brought a frenzy to the Utah basketball landscape. Children and adults alike marvel at his abilities both on and off the court.

High Expectations for Spida

In his rookie season, Spida Mitchell tallied 20.5 pts, 3.7 rbs, and 3.7 asts on 50.6% eFG with a 16.7 Player Efficiency Rating. Only 18 other players from last year’s season achieved similar or superior production.

But just as expectations mounted for Spider-Man in the early days of crime solving, Donovan faces expectations during his sophomore season that loom as large as the mountains we love.

A lackluster, three game start to the season had fans and media personnel flustered and looking for answers. Had Donovan lost a step? What was going on? Why couldn’t he make shots? Why did he look so rusty? The questions felt legitimate and the answer, increasingly more daunting.

Spider-Man faced many adversaries throughout his rise to super hero status, each presenting unique challenges in different situations. Every duel began with marginal success as Spider-Man struggled to identify his opponents’ weakness. However, it was only a matter of time.

The Return of Spida

Since his slow start to the season, Donovan has come alive and reminded us fans just what a Spida can do. Following Utah’s loss to Memphis, Donovan is averaging 26.7 pts, 2.7 rbs, and 5.7 asts on 63.9% eFG.

He’s looking every bit the Spida Mitchell we knew and loved last year…and Jazz fans should expect plenty more!

Spider-Man inherited abilities and powers from day one, no doubt. But he also developed skills and talents over time that facilitated his rise to superhero. Superstardom is clearly up ahead for Mitchell but there’s plenty of improvement and development ahead. All signs point to him being well on his way.

One skill Donovan had yet to master during his rookie season was shooting pull-up three-point shots, of which he only made 29.3%. Through six games this season Donovan has shown remarkable progress, converting on 40.6% of his pull-up three-point attempts.

He was a master at converting shots at the rim. He averaged five attempts per game on 61.7% as a rookie. Mitchell hasn’t let his foot off the gas; he has continued to improve that percentage and currently sits at 76.7% on the same number of attempts per game.

Look Out For Spida

Donovan, like his super hero comparison, Spider-Man, will have his ups and downs. He will likely pass through another rough patch this very year.

Jazz fans can, however, count on Spida’s faith in himself to learn and improve. Do we, his fans, have the same faith in him?

There were time when Spider-Man needed the citizens of New York as much as they needed him. We owe our superstar, Spida Mitchell, the support he need to get through the good and the bad.

If Donovan has taught Jazz fans anything this year, it’s that you can’t hold him down for too long. Sooner or later, you better look out for Spida!

Game 02 Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors

October 20, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Utah Jazz vs GSW

Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors Part of Entertaining NBA Week 01

The Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors game opened up the home schedule for Jazz fans this week. The game was featured on ESPN, marketed as matchup with playoff implications.

The game saw the Jazz jump to a big early lead behind the sharp shooting of Joe Ingles. Ingles finished the game with a career high 27 points in the matchup.

Unfortunately for the home crowd, GSW made the huge comeback. All, of course, capped off by former Jazz man Jonas Jerebko’s last second tip-in off a Kevin Durant miss to seal the game.

The Warriors leave Salt Lake City with the single-point victory, 124-123.

Watch the video below for full game highlights:

Podcast – Jazz Fan Show’s Takeaways from Utah Jazz vs Golden State Warriors

This topic has been discussed on Episode 03 of The Jazz Fan Show, which you can listen to below:

#1 | Joe Ingles AKA “Old Reliable”

After my nerves were finally calm following the Utah Jazz vsGolden State Warriors game, I came out of my rage blackout to realize Joe Ingles led the team in scoring with a career-high 27 points.

Keeping in mind it was somewhere around 1:00 AM at this point, my mind began to settle upon the realization of the possibility of Joe Ingles leading the team in scoring for the year.

Luckily, I was able to fall asleep soon thereafter. BUT, the guy has been the undeniable leader for the team this season.

When the ball is in his hands, my doubts seem to vanish.

I see the pick-and-roll begin to form and I know my man Joe will make sure either he or Rudy get those buckets.

Even when he’s guarding- WAIT.

…I need to stop or this may spiral right into a love poem.

#2 | Refereeing Inconsistencies

One of the main offseason focus points for NBA referees this year was the hold that takes place after a screen.

This was obvious during the first half when The Jazz made it to the free throw line more than 20 times.

However, something at halftime changed the refs minds about the idea. The Jazz found themselves shooting less than 20 free throws in the second half.

I get that emotion and human-error has its place within refereeing. I’m just sick of everybody, including the freaking REFEREES, worshipping this incredibly top-heavy “super team” called the Warriors.

#3 | Expectations for Exum #Alliteration

Dante showed up to play again tonight, which of course, I personally loved to see.

The guy is playing great, and there are even times when I trust him more than Rubio in the PG role.

I’m not saying he should take that starting role from Ricky by any means. I actually prefer him coming off the bench and facing other bench players most of the time.

However, I’ve already become more comfortable with Dante coming in and running the offense. I trust that he can do so.

That being said, please Dante… PLEASE DANTE! You gotta work on not landing so hard, man. I get that it’s the NBA and that happens, but every single time you go to the hole? Maybe take a skydiving class that teaches landing techniques or something?

#4 | Draymond, Draymond, Draymond

I don’t want to waste much energy typing about this clown. Refs have been told to enforce respect for the game, but nothing’s changed for Bozo the clown.

Should’ve been tossed or at least given technical fouls multiple times.

#5 | Jerebko’s Tip = Curse of The Bear?

The man who played the Jazz Bear was let go just prior to the Utah Jazz vs GSW game. The man had played the character for 24 years, receiving the “mascot of the year” award five times in that span, including last season.

When Kevin Durant missed his game-winning shot attempt and Jerebko was standing under the hoop, unchallenged by a single Jazz player, it was almost as if I could see the ghost of the former Jazz Bear sitting on the rim to make sure the shot dropped.

Good one, ghost. Glad we got revenge out of the way early.

Utah Jazz History Doesn’t Repeat Itself… and That’s Okay.

October 17, 2018 by Andy Allred Leave a Comment

Utah Jazz History Doesn't Repeat Itself... And That's Okay

Utah Jazz History – Thoughts Before the Opener

As I look forward to tonight’s season opener, I’ve spent all week thinking of Jazz of seasons past. The years of Jazz fandom have come as a blessing and a curse. I have fond memories of watching and going to games with friends and family, but I also have had my heart broken a few times as well (Jordan pushed off on Russell).

Utah Jazz History From my Childhood

Utah Jazz History Doesn't Repeat Itself... And That's Okay

My dad has been a season ticket holder longer than I’ve been alive. That’s right, back to the Salt Palace days. I specifically remember him paying for a subscription to Homecourt Magazine, and I worshiped those magazines.  I wanted to know every single thing about each player. I’d rip the centerfold posters of the players out of the magazine and hang them all around my bedroom. My dad would also bring home the Gametime program from each game, which at the time seemed like a magazine but now I realize they are just the programs. I would spend evenings in the backyard shooting hoops with my Gametime magazine, acting out how I felt the game should have gone.

History Repeats Itself

As a nineties Jazz fan, I never realized how good I had it.  I didn’t understand that part of having two once in a lifetime Jazz players on the team at one time meant that I may never see players like that play for the Jazz for the rest of my life.  As a high school social studies teacher, I often say to my class the “history repeats itself”, and that’s what I was looking for with the Jazz. After John and Karl retired, I found myself searching, like many Jazz fans, for who would take their place.

The years immediately following John and Karl’s retirement, Jazz fans watched Kirilenko’s freak athleticism and could be mildly entertained. However, the real sting of the loss of those two hadn’t quite sunk in.  In 2005, when the Jazz drafted Deron Williams, I remember thinking to myself “this guy is going to be the next John Stockton”. He wasn’t. When the Jazz added Boozer in 2004, they had their Malone replacement. He wasn’t. Thus began my quest to have history repeat itself in the Jazz organization. I didn’t understand how the Jazz could win without those guys. I repeated this maddening optimism with Mo Williams, Paul Millsap, Devin Harris, Al Jefferson, Trey Burke, and Derrick Favors. I’ll even admit that last year when the Jazz traded for Ricky Rubio I was finally content that the Jazz had found their pass-first point guard that they had needed.  I was desperate to relive the glory days of John and Karl.

Utah Jazz History – A “New Era”

This last season, I finally came to my senses. Watching the Jazz stand pat in the offseason made me realize that the front office and coaching staff are excited about the current roster. How was that possible with no Stockton and Malone to run the patented pick-n-roll? The Jazz may not have replicated their 1997 NBA Finals roster, but they did manage to assemble a roster that could get back there. A new generation of Jazz stars are arising, and with them, a new Jazz philosophy: “Team is Everything”.

Let’s face it, the West is stacked.  Even so, analysts from around the country are giving the Jazz a shot at being right up there with the best. If Donovan can grow this year at the same rate he did last year, if Rudy can continue to have a presence like the Defensive Player of the Year that he is, if Jinglin’ Joe can keep stroking it, I don’t see why the Jazz can’t beat any team on any given night. This team had a strong showing last year, and the exciting part is that there is still room for improvement. Donovan made this clear a few weeks ago in an interview with the Salt Lake Tribune’s Gordon Monson when he said, “… We can’t live on what we should’ve, what we could’ve done. No, let’s just go out and do it. Everybody has that same hunger and passion. We’ve all been underrated our entire careers.” This passion combined with humility is what Jazz fans love. It is the reason Stockton became a household name. But those days are over, in the past, the history has been written. Tonight, the “new era” Jazz continue to write their own legacy.
