Game 21 Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Indiana Pacers

November 27, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Utah Jazz vs Indiana Pacers

Game 21 Takeaways

Utah Jazz vs Indiana Pacers

Jazz fall to Pacers in quick stop at home before another big road trip.

The Utah Jazz played a home game for the first time in awhile Monday, returning to Salt Lake City for a quick layover before embarking on yet another east coast road trip.

Adding insult to injury, the game was the second of a back-to-back. The first, of course, being Sunday night’s victory over the Kings in Sacramento.

Donovan Mitchell sat out his second straight game with a rib contusion, originally suffered during Nov. 13’s road game in Memphis.

Utah fell to Indiana in Indianapolis last week by a large amount, and were hoping to not commit the same mistakes again. Unfortunately, another slow start doomed the Jazz, who fell to 9 – 12 on the season, losing to the Pacers 121 – 98.

Watch the full game highlights below:

Utah Jazz vs Indiana Pacers – Nov. 26, 2018

Game 21 Takeaways

Utah Jazz Fan Show - Takeaway #1

Utah Jazz Finding New Ways to Lose

So, I’ve hammered the whole “slow start” thing pretty much to death throughout the lifetime of this blog. But in my defense, the Jazz have been getting off to some pretty slow starts…

But I digress.

Let’s take a look at how the Utah Jazz started out last night against the Indiana Pacers in Salt Lake City:

Utah Jazz Fan Show

Hey… eight points isn’t THAT bad, right?

A little added focus, and we’re right back in this thing…

Utah Jazz Fan Show

Okay. Another decent quarter. No worries here.

You do realize I’ve seen Alec Burks score 11 points in like… 90 seconds or something, right?

Utah Jazz Fan Show

Yeah, yeah. I get it…

But hey, ANY team can have a tough three quarters.

I bet the Jazz will finish this one out strong and get some momentum for the road… right?

Utah Jazz Fan Show

If you zoom in, you can actually see a tiny white flag at the exact point the Jazz gave up.

Utah Jazz Fan Show - Takeaway #2

Utah Jazz Reaching 50 Wins

I predicted pretty early on, in fact it may have even been before the season began, that the Utah Jazz would reach 50 wins this season.

Now that the season is 25% complete, let’s see how obtainable 50 wins will be.

The Utah Jazz currently have a record of 9 wins and 12 losses.

That means that over the final 61 games of the season, the Utah Jazz will have to win 41 games and only lose 20.

As I eyeballed the remaining schedule, I can see a Utah Jazz team ACTUALLY PLAYING WELL winning 36 more games this season.

Here’s my question:

What is the least amount of games the Utah Jazz can win during the regular season and still get a 6 seed or higher in the playoffs?

Utah Jazz Fan Show - Takeaway #3

Will We Survive the Next Month?

Let’s take a look at the Utah Jazz’s next 20 opponents:

Utah Jazz Fan Show

Best case scenario is like… 10 – 10 right?

So, what happens if we go say 7 – 13 (which is exactly what happened last season)?

Does the team give up? Do we see a trade take place?

I’M NOT FREAKING OUT YOU’RE FREAKING OUT

Game 17 Takeaways - Utah Jazz at Indiana Pacers

Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Indiana Pacers

Road-weary Jazz can’t find the energy to oust Oladipo-less Pacers.

The Utah Jazz played their final game of a tough road trip Monday night, facing off against the Indiana Pacers. This was the first game for the Jazz since they beat Boston for the second time this season.

Prior to the game, it was made known that Indiana star Victor Oladipo would not be playing due to a sore right knee. Tyreke Evans was given the start in his place, and the fresh/energetic Pacers never looked back.

Utah’s dismal, uninspired performance was obvious from the beginning. Utah leaves Indiana with another loss, 121 – 94.

Watch the full game highlights below:

Quick Notes – Utah Jazz at Indiana Pacers

Earth’s Gravity Must Be… Different… This Year

You know how the movie Interstellar explains how gravity affects the speed of time (or something like that… truth is I’m still a little confused)?

That’s what’s happening to the Jazz, right?

Utah got off to yet another slow start Monday night in Indiana. Remember when Utah was obliterated in the first quarter against Philadelphia and Dallas?

This looked a whole lot like that.

Why is it so hard to start for this team? Why is there such a serious lack of urgency on both sides of the ball?

My theory is that this team had too much hype going into the season. While there’s nothing wrong with believing in yourself and having confidence in your team’s abilities, there’s something about having that chip on your shoulder that makes you hustle.

I think that’s part of what Quin and Dennis are trying to build in Utah, a group of underdogs with a chip on their shoulder. Take that culture away and what are you left with?

Underdogs who don’t feel like underdogs.

What is an underdog who doesn’t play like an underdog?

Bad at basketball.

Wearing The Opponents Colors

Who is in charge of deciding when and where the Utah Jazz will be wearing what jersey and how far in advance is that planned?

I just can’t, for the life of me, understand why we were wearing what looked like the INDIANA PACERS WARMUP JERSEYS when playing the Pacers in Indianapolis.

It looked like Indiana was playing itself. While this may not be the entire reason Utah lost, it couldn’t have HELPED.

Seriously, though. Let’s think ahead.

Who’s Night Is It To Play Well?

We’ve seen how the Jazz can play when everyone is doing what they are supposed to. The first matchup against Boston was a good example, with five players scoring over 20 points on the night for the Jazz.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been a common theme this season.

Right now, it seems as though Utah can only get one of it’s players to play well each night. Tonight, it was Ricky Rubio. Unfortunately, Ricky doesn’t play this well like 85% of the time.

When are we going to start to see Utah put together complete nights from multiple players on a consistent basis?

The real question is, will that be something we see at all this year?

Game 07 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves

November 1, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

game 07 takeaways - Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves

Game 07 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves

Derek Rose comes back from the dead to score 50 on Halloween night.

The Utah Jazz visited Minnesota for the final game of its most recent, and first road trip of the season. The Timberwolves were without Jimmy Butler, who’s been making headlines lately for the way he’s been acting in practice.

Butler recently requested a trade from the Minnesota Timberwolves organization, and was widely believed to be headed to Houston or Miami. However, the organization is doing everything it can to keep the star and see success this season.

Was Jimmy Butler sitting because he’s about to be traded? We’ll see.

Also sitting for Minnesota was Jeff Teague, which left former MVP Derek Rose to fill in as the team’s starting point guard. Rose went on to score a career-high 50 points, and was seen showing noticeable emotion following the game.

Rose, who previously played for Chicago and Cleveland, has been injured numerous times during his fall from NBA stardom. His most recent departure came from the Utah Jazz, who waived Rose after he was included in the trade which brought in Jae Crowder.

Unfortunately for the Jazz, 50 points from a zombie was too much to overcome. Jazz bid for a perfect road trip falls just short, as the Timberwolves steal the victory 128-125.

Watch full game highlights below:

Game 07 Takeaways – Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves

Quick Notes

#1 | HE’S ALIVE

Derek Rose put up 50. DEREK ROSE PUT UP 50!

There’s only one explanation:

It was Halloween after all…

#2 | Utah Jazz and Derek Rose

After Derek Rose put up 50, the headlines seemed to read of misdoings by the Utah Jazz.

Social media was the worst of it all, including gems like this heap of trash:

For those who may not be aware: this was the 1st time DRose faced the Jazz since it got him in the Cavs’ makeover & then waived him. Imagine what it felt like for an ex-MVP to be dumped by a franchise that many players, like it or not & recent success aside, see as a last refuge.

— Ric Bucher (@RicBucher) November 1, 2018

So let’s ask ourselves… Did Rose even WANT to play for the Jazz?

Derrick Rose described it as “kind of weird but bittersweet” to be waived by the Utah Jazz earlier in the season. He says he’s now where he want to be in Minnesota and is a game-time decision to face Utah with a sprained right ankle. pic.twitter.com/l0gztBtNVB

— Eric Woodyard (@E_Woodyard) April 1, 2018

You tell me…

#3 | Fighting a Common Enemy

Jimmy Butler has spent the entire season screaming at his teammates during practice.

Recent reports say Butler has been berating his teammates and coaching staff. Apparently, one of his go-tos is: “YOU CAN’T WIN WITHOUT ME!!!”

If you’re on a team that is trying to please a player who has openly demanded a trade, and he’s telling you that you can not win without him, what are you going to do the first game he sits out?

Beat the Jazz by 3. THAT’S WHAT.

#4 | “Hangover” – The Dreaded Word

The final game of a road trip has got to be pretty difficult.

The final game of the first road trip of the season? I can’t even imagine.

As I turned on the TV to watch this game, my brother-in-law mentioned that he was nervous, even if MIN didn’t have Butler or Teague playing.

“Why?” I asked, bewildered.

“It’s the last game of the road trip. They’ve gotta have some kind of a hangover.”

Well congrats on being right, brother-in-law. I hate you for it.

#5 | “Are those ice packs or heat packs?”

At the end of the game, it was hard not to notice the absence of Donovan Mitchell.

Donovan was still on the bench, but sitting at the end (or on the floor) with a wrap around his thigh.

When asked on the television broadcast, Thurl Bailey mentioned that he thought we were seeing heat packs on Donovan’s thigh, because if they were ice packs, that meant the coaching staff was keeping him out the rest of the game.

Unfortunately, they were ice packs.

Eventually we learned the injury was to Donovan’s hamstring.

Is this something to be nervous about? How would the Jazz do without Donovan Mitchell for a stretch of games?

Will the Utah Jazz make a deep run in the playoffs?

March 3, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

Utah Jazz Playoffs

As the hottest team entering the playoffs, are Quin and the Boys poised to surprise the masses by doing something special in the playoffs?

You may remember THIS APRIL 2018 ARTICLE by Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert. In the article, Gobert discusses his development and what led him to be successful in the NBA.

But more importantly was the promise Rudy left with all who read his words:

Utah Jazz Playoffs Rudy Gobert Player's Tribune

Any team that wants a piece of us is gonna have to come to Salt Lake City and deal with all 19,911 of you.

Rudy Gobert | April 2018 Player’s Tribune

Well, here we are. The time has come for Rudy’s words to come to fruition.

The Utah Jazz has done it’s part by reaching the playoffs. Now is the time for fans to reciprocate.

Are We About to See Something SPECIAL??

The Utah Jazz have seemed to fly under the radar for most of the season. At the beginning of the year, it seemed as though the team would seriously underperform.

However, as the season progressed, the Jazz seemed to be figuring out the game without anyone really noticing. Even with a mass of injuries plaguing the team night in and night out (especially at the PG position…), the team still seems to be on an entirely different level than others.

Right now, it seems as though the first round draw for the Jazz will be the Portland Trailblazers. Portland recently lost star guard CJ McCollum to a knee injury and center Jusuf Nurkic to a disgusting broken leg.

This may seem like a lucky break (pun intended) for Utah’s chances of avoiding a first-round exit. However, if the Jazz are able to overcome an injury-plagued Portland team, who would be waiting for them in the second round?

CLICK HERE for more from The Jazz Fan Show.

GSW/OKC First Round Matchup

Chances are Golden State comes out of the first round without much of an issue. If standings stay pat (which could absolutely not happen), the Warriors would match up with the Thunder in round one.

Originally, I thought this would be incredibly beneficial for the Jazz. OKC seems to match up really well with GSW, and has had some real battles with the defending champions this season.

However, Paul George seems to have at least one bum shoulder, which leaves Russell Westbrook to take the brunt of the teams shots.

Look for a whole bunch of complaining, with GSW beating OKC in six (my gut says five).

How much damage can OKC do to GSW in the first round?

If OKC looks anything like it did at the beginning of the season, look for the matchup to be a serious issue for GSW. But the REAL question still looms…

Can the Utah Jazz get to the Western Conference Finals?

It’ll take some serious high-level play and a cataclysmic GSW/OKC first round series, but I won’t say it’s not possible.

Take a look at fivethirtyeight.com’s NBA predictions below:

Utah Jazz Playoffs

Right now the Utah Jazz have a 4% chance of making the Finals, which would make that slightly higher for the WCF.

In conclusion…

My heart says first round exit (tampering expectations), my head says second round exit (logical) but my gut says WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS!

… with a little help, of course.
