Coach Phil discusses the Lakers, Lebron’s disrespect, NBA Officials blown calls and more!

December 5, 2019 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

On Episode 61 of the Utah Jazz Fan Show, brought you by TryDayTrading.com, Kelby Jones invited Coach Phil in to cover for Ryan Van Dorn while he is on a trip in Mexico.

Kelby and Phil discussed the following questions…

  • Are the Los Angeles Lakers actually good?
  • Was Lebron James being disrespectful by removing his shoes?
  • Why are the NBA Officials missing so many easy calls now?
  • How important is team chemistry really and will the Jazz figure it out?
  • Will Giannis be back-to-back MVP?
  • …and much more!

Watch the video below to see exactly what they had to say:

Dear Jazz, Stop Playing for the Whistle

December 18, 2018 by Kelby Jones Leave a Comment

stop playing for the whistle

It’s Time for the Utah Jazz
to Stop Playing for the Whistle

A Heartfelt Plea from a Lifelong Jazz Fan

My dearest Utah Jazz,

It is with sincere reflection that I choose to write you this note today.

You see, I spend a great deal of my time researching, pondering and discussing the inner and outer workings of your organization, so much so, in fact, that at times I feel as though I am a part of it myself.

Please know that I do not say these things out of spite, hatred or a feeling of superiority. But instead, I relay this message out of love, devotion and loyalty to a culture and an identity which I feel perfectly suits this fine community on the banks of the great lake of salt.

Culture and Identity Perceived by a Utah Jazz Fan

We all know that the Utah Jazz knows what it means to be an underdog. The facts that you’re a small market team and lack any real nightlife (you family-oriented SUCKERS) are just the beginning to a long list of reasons why you shouldn’t be successful in today’s NBA.

And now, it seems there’s another reason to add:

NBA Referees Have Fragile Egos

It’s nothing new. In fact, it’s something we’ve seen forever, but perhaps no more than during the past decade or so.

I’m not really exactly sure how these egos became so fragile. Perhaps it was years and years and years of being constantly berated by “adults” being paid millions of dollars to play a game.

I’m sure it didn’t help that these “adults” keep getting younger and younger, being paid more and more with every passing year.

Somewhere along the lines, these referees also began respecting certain players and their team more than other players and their team.

What does this weird bias lead to?

Watch some highlights of it below:

This Utah Jazz Fan’s Conclusion After a Dumpster Fire

The Utah Jazz have seen this type of “officiating” for the entirety of its existence. It goes back to the team’s days matching up against the Showtime Lakers and the GOAT.

But for some reason, it seems to have gotten worse as of late. It’s almost as if the Refs have begun to openly say:

“That team from Utah? Yeah, we’re not gonna help them out at all.”

Utah Jazz Argument

Need an example of NBA Officials blatantly missing calls that everyone in the entire world can see should go in the Jazz’ favor?

Replay Review (Tiven): if Harden was attempting a 2 or 3-point FG (initially ruled a 2-point FG attempt) when he was fouled in Q4 of #UTAatHOU. Ruling: Overturned, 3-point FG attempt. pic.twitter.com/eJAIAmqeWx

— NBA Official (@NBAOfficial) December 18, 2018

How about an example of NBA Officials blatantly calling a foul that SHOULD NEVER have been called, and ultimately, goes AGAINST the Utah Jazz:

In case you’re wondering how sad and petty the @OfficialNBARefs are… this was called a foul on @rudygobert27 pic.twitter.com/Jsvfjpkpfk

— The Jazz Fan Show (@JazzFanShow) December 11, 2018

Now I’ll admit, for the first quarter of the season, these kinds of things simple enraged me. But now, I’m used to them.

What I’m getting really sick of at this point is Utah Jazz players arguing for a call while the other team runs down the floor and scores.

Like, I get it. You should have gotten the call. But guess what?

The refs not gonna call it.

I’m sorry, there’s nothing we can do about it. Their fragile egos and inability to see the world objectively makes it impossible to call a game in your favor.

So what do we do now?

How about we just accept that the world is against us and…

JUST KEEP PLAYING BASKETBALL.

No more arguing with the refs. Save your postgame comments and your Mario war cries and…

GET BACK ON DEFENSE.

Overall, just please, for all that is good and decent in this world…

STOP PLAYING FOR THE WHISTLE.

It’s never been called our way, so why would it start now?

Game 26 Takeaways – Utah Jazz vs Houston Rockets

Game 26 Takeaways - Utah Jazz vs Houston Rockets

Game 26 Takeaways

Utah Jazz vs Houston Rockets

Utah Jazz gets second straight blowout win over teams from Texas.

The Utah Jazz played their second straight game at home in Salt Lake City Thursday night for what seemed like the first time all season.

The Jazz were also facing a familiar opponent, the Houston Rockets, who the Jazz faced (and lost to) in the second round of last season’s NBA playoffs.

This was the two teams second meeting this season, with Utah now holding a 2-0 advantage over Houston, beating the Rockets 118 – 91.

Quick Takeaways

Rudy vs The Refs (and a Bottle of Water)

You can listen to Ryan Van Dorn and myself discuss this incredible instance on Episode 10 of The Jazz Fan Show!

Listen below:

Houston’s Championship Window

I know this seems maybe a bit premature, but it genuinely seems to me as though the Houston Rockets know their window for a championship with this group of guys has closed.

This, obviously, isn’t even close the level of team the Utah Jazz faced (and got destroyed by) last season in the playoffs. Aside from the obvious offseason departures, and an issue with Carmelo, Houston seems like they’re playing with their heads down and not even really sure they want to be here.

My theory?

When you play the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, make it all the way to Game 07 and lose… that’s what we call a heartbreaker.

Unfortunately, not every team is able to come back the following year and compete to be at the same level.

Is Houston a good example of this? Only time will tell.

Our Road to 50 Wins…

… seems to have gotten a bit easier, not to mention the fact that this month is supposed to be absolutely brutal for the Utah Jazz and they just beat two of the “hardest” opponents.

I know it’s still not super likely, but if the Jazz have turned a corner (which I think they may have based on two blowouts over Texas teams in two tries), the special season we all expected may still be within reach.

Unfortunately, and we all knew it would be this way, we’re still going to be kicking ourselves over the dumb losses we experienced at the beginning of the season.

Here’s hoping we have the same end to this year as last.

Utah Jazz Steal One on the Road as Mitchell Finally Breaks Out

The Utah Jazz began a four-game road trip yesterday against the Houston Rockets. The game is the first since Utah lost to Memphis at home earlier this week.

Many were wondering how this game would go following the Memphis debacle. Would the Jazz figure out their offensive woes? Did Donovan forget how to play basketball? Would the Jazz ever win again?!

Luckily, Chris Paul was suspended for a recent altercation between Houston and Los Angeles (I’m sure you heard…) and James Harden left in the fourth quarter with a hamstring issue.

The Utah Jazz were able to leave Houston with an important 100-89 win over the Rockets.

Now I’m not saying those two factors were the ENTIRE reason the Jazz won, but it definitely helped. #OntoTheNextOne

Quick Notes

#1 | Donovan Finally Wakes Up

One of the things I was most looking forward to seeing this season was how Donovan Mitchell would perform after all the pressure that came with his incredible rookie year.

While I expected there to be some setbacks, the first few games of the year had me sweating a little bit about the amount of pressure we were putting on Donovan.

Fortunately, any question I had about the sophomore was put to rest last night as he went off for 38 points against Houston.

After the game, Donovan explained some of the issues he’s been dealing with going into his second year.

“The past few games, I’d been struggling because I’d been kind of pressing the issue,” Mitchell said. “I came into [Wednesday’s game] with the mindset of just finding the open guy. That was really my biggest thing. Last year in the playoffs, there were games where I got too deep or too whatever, just kind of not making the right plays. To me, just being able to make the right reads early just allowed me to settle down and relax a little bit.

“I always put pressure on myself, whether it was last year at the beginning of the year or whatever, just to be perfect. Obviously, that’s impossible.”

We should all have the same attitude about this team.

Instead of incredibly high expectations, we should realize the game itself isn’t perfect, and neither will our team be.

Enjoy the ride people. It will be over before we know it!

#2 | How Much Did We Need This?

After attending Monday’s loss to Memphis at home, I personally needed this win more than most.

As a fan base, I don’t know that anyone was TOO concerned with some of the results we’d seen through the first week of regular season basketball.

However, I think there was a growing anxiety over the individual play of certain Jazz men.

It was good to see this type of win on the road at this moment in the season. I think it really helped the fan base get back on track in terms of supporting our team.

Now let’s keep it going!

#3 | …It’s More of a One-Headed Monster

Chris Paul was sitting out after last weekend’s altercation with Rajon Rondo and the Los Angeles Lakers.

James Harden, who was having a great game (as always), left the game with a hamstring issue in the fourth quarter.

Basically all the Jazz had left to deal with was… Carmelo Anthony?

What I’m trying to say is that I’m not actually sure how much of a test this game was. A healthy Houston team could be a whole different monster.

#4 | Tricky (to talk about) Ricky

Let me start this out by saying that I very much like Ricky Rubio on the Jazz and think he fits in very well.

But I can’t be the only one to see that he’s having some serious struggles to start off the year, right?

This time last season, I remember having similar thoughts. In fact, there was a time I even thought he’d be a good trade piece.

Is Ricky Rubio just going through the same stuff he was last year?

Will we see the return to normal?

I hope we find out sooner rather than later.

#5 | Rookies, Am I Right?

Grayson Allen is not afraid to shoot.

The dude has been in for single-digit minutes over the entire year combined. But last night, I watched him enter the game, shoot two threes and walk right back to the bench.

Is no hesitation a good or bad sign?
