Game 22 Takeaways
Utah Jazz at Brooklyn Nets
Jazz start the road trip off the right way with a win in Brooklyn.
The Utah Jazz began yet another east coast road trip Wednesday night in Brooklyn against a young Nets team looking to get back on track.
This was Utah’s first game since losing another home game by a good amount, this time to the Indiana Pacers.
Donovan Mitchell returned to the lineup for the Utah Jazz after missing two games with a rib contusion suffered against the Memphis Grizzlies earlier this month. Mitchell had a large number of fans in the crowd being from the area, and he made sure to give them a show by scoring 29 points.
On the back of Mitchell’s big night, the Utah Jazz start the road trip off the right way by beating the Brooklyn Nets 101 – 91.

Quick Takeaways
Donovan’s New York Posse
Each time Donovan Mitchell made a shot against the Brooklyn Nets, there was a large chunk of the crowd that could be heard over the broadcast cheering.
Listen to the crowd immediately after Donovan Mitchell makes this 3-pointer at the 8:24 point of the video (video will start at 8:24 mark):
I heard reports before, during and after the game regarding all the people who were at the game cheering Donovan on, some saying the total figure was north of 100 guests in attendance.
All there to cheer on Donovan Mitchell, their hometown hero.
It’s weird how that sound of the crowd cheering Spida on in Brooklyn can be so great and so terrifying all at the same time.
Poor Play by 67% of Utah Jazz Point Guards
Ricky Rubio logged an astounding stat line for this game. He played 32 minutes, had 6 points shooting 0/9 including 0/5 from beyond the arc.
Also, I received the following text from my brother-in-law, who is severely anti-Dante Exum, during the game:
It’s one thing with Dante, but when Ricky has that kind of game, you start to wonder if something is seriously wrong.
I know we’ve seen the near 30-point games this season, but overall we haven’t been seeing the best of the Spanish Samurai.
When does Rick show up this year offensively (if at all)?
The Problem With Last Year
If you’ve watched basically any Utah Jazz game this season, chances are there’s at least been a stretch where the team was playing like they were still kinda drunk from the night before.
This has been the biggest issue with the team’s failure to meet early season expectations this season. There doesn’t seem to be any purpose to their play.
Last night it dawned on me why that may be…
When a team has a season like the Jazz did last year, and then comes back the following season with almost the exact same team, it’s gonna be hard for that team to play their hardest at the beginning if they think the end of the year will turn out the same way it did before…
Does that even make sense?
It just seems like maybe the team is banking on having the same type of run at the end of this season that they did at the end of last season. Which, in turn, leads to them not playing as hard at the beginning of the year.
The problem with that is what are the chances this team is capable of accomplishing the same type of feat as last year’s team?
That’s the problem with last year.
